Securing critical IT infrastructure and ensuring production continuity – Mobile Data Center Case Study

OLSA Poland Sp. z o.o. is a manufacturing company in the lighting industry and a member of the MAGNA LIGHTING group. As a large-scale manufacturer, OLSA prioritizes its IT infrastructure to ensure all production processes run without interruption.

The project’s objective was to secure production systems while addressing IT fire safety requirements. Ensuring production continuity was the top priority.

The client’s primary challenge was a lack of space for existing infrastructure (such as servers) requiring a controlled environment. There was also a critical need to enhance data security, increase computing power, and expand storage capacity.

Following the merger of OLSA and MAGNA, it became necessary to align the IT infrastructure with MAGNA Group’s global standards. A containerized mobile data center proved to be the ideal solution.

Implementation of the Mobile Data Center at OLSA

During the project, a containerized server room equipped with Dell VxRail infrastructure (consisting of three nodes) was delivered. Additionally, 50 existing Access Points were replaced with new units provided by the client.

Dell VxRail is a hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI) that allows for fast, flexible, cloud-like scaling of the IT environment while offering higher performance and direct accessibility. This enables the client to expand their IT infrastructure at a pace dictated by their evolving business needs.

The deployment of Access Points involved replacing legacy hardware, configuring network addressing, and migrating the infrastructure to the new APs. This phase was carried out during the Pol’and’Rock Festival (formerly Woodstock Festival Poland), which took place nearby. Due to the festival’s proximity, access to the production facilities was restricted and required additional verification and special passes under tightened security procedures. Despite these challenges, the configuration of the new servers and the migration of the entire production environment from the legacy servers to VxRail was completed in just three days.

Mobile Data Center – data security in a customized format

A key element of the project was the delivery of an independent Perceptus Mobile Data Center. The container was built to customized dimensions, allowing it to be installed in a specifically designated area inside one of the production halls.

Due to the unique layout of the facility, the mobile server room had to fit precisely between structural support columns. Consequently, the external dimensions were specifically modified to meet these spatial constraints.

The management console handles endpoint protection, network management, and resource monitoring. The implementation of the containerized server room provided a secure physical location for the server infrastructure, thereby safeguarding production continuity from a foundational level.

Administrator training

The implementation included comprehensive training for server administrators on the configuration and operation of Dell VxRail. The 16-hour training session was conducted on-site at the Perceptus headquarters in Zielona Góra.
